Woman Climbs SC Flag Pole, Takes Down Confederate Flag
Charleston, South Carolina – Two activists, Bree Newsome, 30, and Ian Tyson, 30, were arrested at the South Carolina Statehouse on Saturday morning, after Bree climbed the flag pole, ignored police calls for her to come down, and took down the Confederate Battle Flag.
Ignoring the police
Both entered the wrought iron gate to the capitol grounds, and Bree (who is Black, by the way) climbed the pole. About halfway up at 0615, police demanded that she come down. She refused and continued climbing. When she reached the top, she grabbed the Confederate battle flag from its place of honor and climbed back down. She was arrested when she returned to the ground.
Both suspects were charged with defacing monuments on state Capitol grounds, a misdemeanor that carries a fine of up to $5,000 and a prison term of up to three years or both. Both have been given a bond of $3,000 and are allowed to leave the state. They are from North Carolina.
The flag is protected by state law in South Carolina. It was raised again after she was taken away.
Bree is a #BlackLivesMatter activists, according to an article in the International Business Times.
The heat is on
Bree’s act of #TakeDownTheFlag drew praise and many comments of support on Twitter, although some were not so sure. Anger over the flag fight has erupted across the South. And Bree has become somewhat of a folk hero in the battle against the flag, as Jesse Jackson and other activists have chimed in on the debate on her side.
