Virginia Beach – Two Teens Charged with Conspiracy to Commit Terrorism
Virginia Beach: Saturday night was Bayside High School’s prom at The Westin in Town Center. Extra security was on hand for the event, and two teens were arrested for conspiracy to commit an act of terror.
Police were alerted to a possible problem when two people attempted to purchase tickets for the event, neither of whom attended Bayside High School. The tickets were on sale from April 23 through May 11. Calling the attempt “highly unusual,” the Virginia Beach police began developing a security plan for the event.
The night of the prom, police arrested two teens who had plans to kill.
The Virginia-Pilot reported,
Between 6 and 10 p.m., officers identified one of the people who had tried to get into the prom. When they approached him, he ran and discarded a 9 mm handgun, Cervera said. The investigation led police to obtain a search warrant for a room at the hotel, he said, where they identified a 17-year-old from Virginia Beach and found a .45-caliber semi-automatic rifle with a loaded magazine and a box of ammunition, Cervera said.
That teen, whose name was not released, is charged with conspiracy to carry out a terrorist act and possession of a weapon as a juvenile, Cervera said.
The 17 year old reportedly was not attending Bayside HS, and had no current connections to the Virginia Beach School system due to a previous disciplinary issue. His trial in Juvenile Court is set for June 27, 2018.
The other teen’s name was Michael Russell Coleman, 18. From this incident, he was charged with conspiracy to carry out a terrorist act and two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, unless Virginia Beach prosecutors change the charges.
Coleman, who is now in custody in Norfolk, was wanted by Norfolk Police on “four felony counts of attempted malicious wounding, four felony counts of firearm use in the first degree, and one misdemeanor count of reckless handling of a firearm.” He is being held without bail. The incident with those charges took place on June 8. Coleman has never been a student at Bayside High School. He is set to appear on Monday in Virginia Beach.
