Veterans Before Refugees! Take a Stand!

 In Politics, Veterans

Thousands of refugees have been granted special immigration status in the United States, which brings access to government benefits and jobs. Veterans, on the other hand are often at risk for homelessness with no “safety net,” no group assistance. It’s past time to take a stand. Veterans Before Refugees!

Resettlement

It costs about $582 Million per year to resettle thousands of refugees. They receive welfare, cash assistance, and medical care for at least 3 months after their arrival, although it varies by state. They are supposed to obtain a job within a year, and pay back the cost of their flight to the U.S., but since the government doesn’t actually track them, those issues are iffy. Some Universities and Colleges provide free education for refugees. They can go wherever they wish when they get here.

But veterans do not always have those choices.

The U.S. spends less than 24 cents for every dollar spent for caring for our veterans.

Although a major campaign to end homelessness in the veteran community began in 2010, there are still literally thousands of veterans and their families who are in desperate need of assistance. Homes, medical, food, and substance abuse programs, disability issues are only part of what they need.

“Poverty, lack of support from groups or networks, and substandard housing put about 1.4 million veterans at risk for homelessness…

More than 40,000 homeless vets receive compensation or pension benefits each month, but that’s not enough to find affordable housing, according to the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Many vets have skills learned through the military that are not applicable for occupations in civilian life.

Returning veterans are twice as likely to become chronically homeless as other Americans, according to Veterans Inc. Women veterans are four times as likely to become homeless as male veterans.” Newsmax

I’s a damn shame that people in the “Great US of A” forget our Veterans at a blink of an eye…but when a Combat Veteran tells a civilian that he severed in a War Campaign; all of a sudden they call him or her a Hero. Little that they know t he “Hero’s ” never came back home, but those who have, have to share the burden for their lost buddies for life; even if they never knew them. Refugees doesn’t fit the criteria and doesn’t deserve free hand outs from our Government & Private Sector; if they want that kind of service they should seek from their Country not ours.
