USS Boxer Downs Iranian Drone Over Strait of Hormuz
President Trump announced that on Thursday at around 10 a.m. local time, Marines aboard the USS Boxer used a jamming device on an Iranian Drone that came within striking distance to the ship. The USS Boxer is an amphibious assault ship.
“The Boxer took defensive action against an Iranian drone, which had closed into a near distance, approximately 1000 yards, ignoring multiple calls to stand down threatening safety of ship and ship’s crew. …The U.S. reserves the right to defend personnel, facilities, interests.” President Trump
“At approximately 10 a.m. local time, the amphibious ship USS Boxer was in international waters conducting a planned inbound transit of the Strait of Hormuz. A fixed wing unmanned aerial system (UAS) approached Boxer and closed within a threatening range. The ship took defensive action against the UAS to ensure the safety of the ship and its crew.” Pentagon Spokesperson Jonathan Hoffman
The move comes on the same day as Iran admitted it seized a “foreign oil tanker” that it claimed was carrying 1 million barrels of “smuggled” oil. Of course they didn’t identify which tanker or which country, but we reported a missing UAE based tanker on July 16th. Coincidence, right?
Iran has been malfunctioning on many levels. They’ve claimed to be enriching uranium far past the levels required in the “Iran deal.” The shot down a US drone, which almost resulted in an action they would not have liked, but the President cancelled the airstrikes at the last minute. They’ve seized an oil tanker. They’ve harassed ships in the international shipping lanes. So what’s next?
On the heels of Iran shooting down the U.S. drone on June 20, Trump approved military strikes on Iran in retaliation, but then abruptly cancelled them.
Days later, Trump signed an executive ordering imposing what he called “hard-hitting” new sanctions on Iran.
“We will continue to increase pressure on Tehran until the regime abandons its dangerous activities,” including its nuclear ambitions, Trump said on June 24.
The new sanctions denied Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his office access to key financial resources. The sanctions also targeted Iranian military leaders who were responsible for shooting down the drone.
Sanctions or shooting. Wonder which will come next.
