US Navy’s 245th Birthday!

 In Military

Today, October 13, 2020 is the US Navy’s 245th Birthday! On October 13, 1775, a resolution in teh Contental Congress establlished the United States Navy. But it wasn’t until 1972 that Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of the date as the US Navy’s Birthday.

Our first President, George Washington, wrote to the Marquis de Lafayette on the need for a Navy in 1781:

“It follows then as certain as that night succeeds the day, that without a decisive naval force we can do nothing definitive, and with it, everything honorable and glorious.” George Washington

This year’s theme of the Navy’s 245th celebration is “Victory at Sea.” The Navy’s Planning order for the celebration stated:

“13 October 2020 will mark the Navy’s 245th Birthday. The central theme of this year’s 245th birthday and heritage week will be “Victory at Sea,” which encompasses the Navy’s efforts in battle during World War II in the Pacific Theater. The announcement of this theme allows planners at all echelons to focus on talking points, guest speakers, and solicitations for this year’s commemorations. Beginning with the establishment of our Navy in 1775 and continuing to our current modern fleet, our Navy has stood the watch. The United States Navy has been the shield of the Republic for more than two centuries. We are the Nation’s forward deployed presence 24/7, 365 days a year.

Today, the Navy’s Birthday celebration; encompasses the traditions of honor, courage, and commitment; the value of being second to none; and the Sailors who are the very foundation upon which we have built the world’s greatest Navy.”

One of the most famous Naval quotations was uttered by Captain John Paul Jones on September 23, 1779.

“I have not yet begun to fight!”

Captain John Paul Jones said this during the famous battle between Bonhomme Richard and Serapis on 23 September 1779. It seems that some of Jones’ men cried for surrender, but not John Paul Jones. Captain Richard Pearson of Serapis asked Jones if he had surrendered. Jones uttered the immortal words: “I have not yet begun to fight!…”
