US Navy Veteran Michael White Released from Iran Prison
US Navy veteran Michael White, 48, who originally went to Iran in 2018, was released into the custody of the Swiss embassy. He is on his way home on a Swiss Government flight, and will be transferred to the US at Zurich.
“I am incredibly grateful to the Administration, especially the team at the State Department for their work on Michael’s case.” White’s mother
The Swiss government is the intermediary between the US and Iran, since there are no formal diplomatic relations with them.
….I will never stop working to secure the release of all Americans held hostage overseas! Thank you Switzerland for your great assistance.

“Michael White’s a pretty tough guy. He’s a cancer survivor. He has now survived two years in Iranian prison where he was beaten in prison. He then contracted in COVID and survived. The Iranian regime has a history of using Americans as political pawns.” Brian Hook, State Department special Representative for Iran
He had gone to the country to visit his girlfriend, but was arrested and thrown into prison. He was sentenced in March of 2019 to 10 years for “insulting” the Ayatollah. This year he contracted COVID-19, which rampaged through Iran. Earlier in 2020, he was released on a “medical furlough” but ordered to stay in Iran.
A senior U.S. official told Fox News that as part of the deal to free White, the U.S. agreed to release an Iranian-American doctor, Majid Taheri. Taheri served 16 months for violating American sanctions against Iran and was sentenced Thursday to time served. He’s lived in the U.S. for 33 years and is a medical doctor in Florida, the official said.
The Trump administration also seeks to return other American citizens held in Iran – Siamak Namazi, his father Baquer Namazi, and Morad Tahbaz. The remains of Robert Levinson are also on the list.
