Two US Boats, 10 Sailors in Iranian Custody

Nine men and one woman are in the custody of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard today after their U.S. Navy “Riverine” boats were seized by Iranian authorities in Iran’s territorial waters. It is believed that one of the two boats may have had mechanical issues and ran aground.

Assurances from Iran

Iranian officials assured Secretary of State John Kerry that the sailors and gunboats would be returned promptly probably tomorrow morning.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest stated that Obama was unlikely to mention the situation in his State of the Union speech tonight. (That’s about right, it might mess up his stream of lies).

Fox wrote,

Pentagon officials said the incident occurred near Farsi Island in the Gulf. They said one of their two small boats had mechanical trouble, causing one or both to run aground. The sailors were then picked up by Iran and taken to the island. But it is unclear where they are now.

The boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain at the time, and the Pentagon briefly lost contact with the crews.

A senior Obama administration official told Fox News that Iranian authorities have assured the United States of the sailors’ “safety and well-being” and said they “will promptly be allowed to continue their journey.”

The semi-official Iranian news agency, FARS, said the sailors were trespassing in Iranian waters.

Timing

If  Iran says our naval personnel were trespassing, will they give our sailors back? Will they give the Riverines back? This incident happened on the day of Obama’s last State of the Union Address.  It happened a few days before Iran was supposed to satisfy the criteria for sanctions to be lifted with the nuclear deal.

So what is this all about?  According to the Pentagon there is no evidence that there was any hostile intent on the part of the sailors. So…they pressed their luck, knowing full well that this President would do nothing to jeopardize his signature nuke deal.
