Two Massachusetts Teens Paint “USA” on a Mosque
Burlington, Massachusetts – Two 18 year olds were arrested by Burlington Police a short time after they spray-painted the outside of a Mosque with “USA”and pitched eggs at it on Sunday morning.
Cameron S. Cappella and Derrik M. Demone were charged with tagging the outside of the Burlington Islamic Center mosque with graffiti, and Malicious Injury to Property in excess of $250.
Massachusetts Live reported,
Authorities were called to the mosque at 130 Lexington St. after an Islamic Center member noticed graffiti and other damage around 1:45 a.m. Sunday. “U.S.A.” was written numerous times with red spray paint outside the mosque, and eggs “were apparently thrown at the building,” police said.
Video surveillance from the mosque showed the suspects drive up to the building and remain there for about 20 minutes before leaving, police said. Burlington Police quickly tracked down the suspects and took them into custody around 11:30 a.m. Monday.
According to CBS, there were “worshipers” inside the mosque when it was vandalized, and the Imam told them not to go outside because it wasn’t “safe.”
The boys were released on their own recognizance, and must now comply with a midnight to 6 a.m. curfew. They will return to court on December 11. The Mosque was vandalized in 2013 with the same words “USA.”
Police have stated that more charges may be forthcoming, particularly if they decide this is a “hate crime.” There also may be one more suspect not yet arrested.
Hate crime or drunken prank?
The boys’ actions have spawned comments like this one from “K” –
“We live in a country where too few of our youth know what’s happening in the world around them. While these young men need to learn a few things (like how not to get caught) I applaud them for being aware and for standing up for their beliefs.”
After two drunken teens were arraigned on vandalism charges Monday, Islamic leaders demanded the Sunday incident be classified as a hate crime.
Though police in Burlington, Massachusetts are chalking it up to an alcohol-fueled prank by 18-year-olds Cameron Cappella and Derrik Demone, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has signaled “additional charges” may be possible.
How could “USA” be considered a hate crime? According to the Boston Globe, Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Executive Director John Robbins “has said he believes the graffiti reflects an offensive view that Muslims are not fully American.”
Of course CAIR wants it classified as a “hate crime” – it’s what they do. They want to punish everyone for anything, even if it was drunk kids.
