Trump’s First SCOTUS Pick: Neil Gorsuch confirmed by the Senate

 In Politics

Trump promised along the campaign trail that he would nominate SCOTUS judges who would be for the 2nd Amendment, and who would rule based on the Constitution. He has come through with that promise in Neil Gorsuch, who was confirmed today by the Senate…but not without drama.

Democrats were incensed that Trump picked a strong Conservative for the court. They desperately wanted someone “more mainstream.”

Republicans go nuclear

In spite of the fact that Mr. Gorsuch has a sterling reputation and is eminently qualified for the court, Democrats made his life hell. As an appellate judge in Colorado, he was confirmed without rancor. But not so for the Supreme Court. Dems wanted him to be a “check” on President Trump rather than rule based on the constitution.

“Ours is the job of interpreting the Constitution. And that document isn’t some inkblot on which litigants may project their hopes and dreams for a new and perfected tort law, but a carefully drafted text judges are charged with applying according to its original public meaning.” Neil Gorsuch

Democrats successfully filibustered his nomination until Senator Mitch McConnell found his backbone  and stopped it with a cloture vote. Today the GOP opted to go “nuclear” to push his nomination through with a simple majority of 51. It worked. It’s probably the first time in history any Republican can ever say “thanks, Harry Reid, for changing the rules.”

[Reid began the”nuclear option” in 2013 when Obama’s Supreme court nomination was stalled. If they can use it, so can we. Now there is hope that the Supreme Court can swing a little to the right instead of continuing the march toward activism.]

NRA support

Gorsuch has NRA support, as he is openly pro-second amendment. They issued a statement today:

“On behalf of our five million members, the NRA congratulates Neil Gorsuch on his confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. Gorsuch is an excellent choice to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Justice Scalia… The NRA would like to thank President Trump for fulfilling his campaign promise to place a pro-Second Amendment justice on the Supreme Court. Nominating Gorsuch has again demonstrated President Trump’s unwavering support for our fundamental right to self-defense.” Chris Cox, Executive Director of  NRA-ILA

Mr. Gorsuch lives in Boulder, Colorado with his wife and children. He is an avid outdoorsman who raises farm animals and loves hunting, fishing and skiing. You can read more of his bio at this link.
