Trump Picks Business Exec as Navy Secretary…Man with a Military Connections

 In Military, opinion, Politics

Trump has selected Philip Bilden as his nominee for Navy Secretary. He joins Heather Wilson for AF Secretary, and Vincent Viola as Army Secretary. All of the nominees must be confirmed by the Senate.

Bilden spent 10 years in the Army reserve from 1986-1996 as a military intelligence officer, leaving as a Captain and resigning his commission to move to Hong Kong.

The liberals are complaining that he has “limited  military experience.” The last SecNav, Ray Mabus had only two years of experience in the Navy, and never did anything military beyond that service.

“All three of these nominees have my utmost confidence. They will provide strong civilian leadership to strengthen military readiness, gain full value from every taxpayer dollar spent on defense, and support our service members, civilians, and their families. I appreciate the willingness of these three proven leaders to serve our country. They had my full support during the selection process, and they will have my full support during the Senate confirmation process.” James Mattis, Secretary of Defense

In a press release on the nomination:

“Mr. Bilden, a highly successful business leader, former Military Intelligence officer, and Naval War College cybersecurity leader will bring strategic leadership, investment discipline, and Asia Pacific regional and cyber expertise to the Department of the Navy…

…Bilden has longstanding trusted relationships with senior military leaders, particularly in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, through his years of national security engagement, including service on the Board of Directors of the United States Naval Academy Foundation and the Board of Trustees of the Naval War College Foundation…

The left wing media and even some in the Navy are questioning the pick, saying that as part of HabourVest Partners, who did business with China only as a “friend of China,  he is the wrong guy for the job.

Others are saying he’s the perfect one for the job because of his understanding of how China thinks.

“[Bilden] is a man of extraordinary expertise on maritime and nautical affairs. He is an expert on Asia and understands, in particular, China very deeply. He’s a highly distinguished businessman who understands efficiency.” Admiral James Stavridis to  US Naval Institute News

Philip Bilden could provide much needed expertise for the US Navy regarding tensions with China over the South China Sea. It is also hoped his business experience will help accomplish an upswing in the number of ships in the Navy’s fleet and ability to repair ships.
