Toddler on Time Cover was Never “Ripped” from Her Mother
The TIME cover that showed a photo of a 2 year old Honduran toddler, Yanela, in a pink jacket, sobbing and looking up at a stoic Donald Trump, is deceiving. According to her father, Denis Javier Valera Hernandez, the child was never separated from her mother at the border. Yet the photo became the “face of the immigration separation” issue. It was used not only by TIME, but also the New York Times, as well as several other msm outlets.
“Valera said the little girl and her mother, Sandra Sanchez, have been detained together in the Texas border town of McAllen, where Sanchez has applied for asylum, and they were not separated after being detained near the border.
Honduran deputy foreign minister Nelly Jerez confirmed Valera’s version of events.”…
“…The photo was used on a Facebook fundraiser that drew more than $17 million dollars in donations from close to half a million people for the Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES), a Texas-based nonprofit that provides legal defense services to immigrants and refugees.”
Sandra and Yanela reportedly left Honduras without telling her husband or their three other children, according to the Daily Mail. He stated that he thought she probably left for better economic opportunites, but did not support her decision to leave with their daughter. He only learned of the sitution three weeks later when he saw the images of their capture. She paid $6,000 for a coyote (two legged variety) to take her and Yanela on the trip. They were caught at the Rio Grande River while attempting to cross on a raft.
“You can imagine how I felt when I saw that photo of my daughter. It broke my heart. It’s difficult as a father to see that, but I know now that they are not in danger. They are safer now than when they were making that journey to the border.” Denis Hernandez
The photo was taken by John Moore of Getty images, who was searching for an emotional photo (which is normal for any photojournalist, by the way). It is a powerful image, but the truth behind it was not known until the father stepped up and said something. The photo has been used for political purposes as fodder for leftists and their agendas. That itself is a sad situation.
Then you have protesters who used a photo of a child crying in a cage that was actually staged…not real. There are a lot of things pushed by people with agendas that aren’t real.
