That “Defund Minneapolis Police” Problem: Violent Crime Rampant

 In Domestic

“Defund Minneapolis Police!” That was the cry just after George Floyd was killed. The city council voted unanimously to get rid of the police department, as their action spread to other Democrat controlled cities across the country. But now, people are whining because the police aren’t doing anything about the rising violent crimes in the city.

Defund Minneapolis police!

Two campaign workers who were assisting the GOP candidate running against Ilhan Omar were shot on Monday, one 17 year old fatally, as they stood at a gas station on the city’s north side. The assailant(s) approached them on foot, shot them, and fled the scene. (MPR) (CBS local4) Republican Lacy Johnson is running against Ilhan Omar, and while the shooting may have nothing to do with the campaign, it does illustrate the problem in the city of Minneapolis. Violent crime has risen far above last year’s totals.

MPR reported,

Just months after leading an effort that would have defunded the police department, City Council members at Tuesday’s work session pushed chief Medaria Arradondo to tell them how the department is responding to the violence.

The number of reported violent crimes, like assaults, robberies and homicides are up compared to 2019, according to MPD crime data. More people have been killed in the city in the first nine months of 2020 than were slain in all of last year. Property crimes, like burglaries and auto thefts, are also up. Incidents of arson have increased 55 percent over the total at this point in 2019.

For his part, Arradondo told council members that the department has instituted several measures, including adding more officers to patrol and investigative duties and cracking down on robberies.

The council President, Lisa Bender, accused the police department of being “defiant” and refusing to arrest criminals.  MPD has lost at least 100 officers since the council’s inital action, which is more than double the usual attrition rate. The council also pulled $1 million from their budget to hire “violence interrupters” that were supposed to be able to mitigate the violent crime. The council claimed that their constituents were saying that the police “aren’t there” when the public calls, or that their people are feeling “terrorized.” Carjackings, robberies, shootings, all have increased since the council decided to replace the police department with a more “community oriented” organization.

Apparently they haven’t done that yet?

The Minneapolis city council now wonders why there police aren’t there for them after bashing the department, cutting their budget, and demanding they be replaced by social workers. Hypocrisy at its finest. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
