Calling it the “deadliest terror attack in modern Egyptian History,” a Sinai Mosque was the target of a bombing and gunfire on Friday. The al-Rawda mosque, where Sufis gathered in the town of Bir al-Abed, was attacked during Jummah (Friday) prayers, killing at least 235 people, wounding over a hundred more.

The BBC reported that the gunmen pulled up to the Mosque in four off road vehicles and set off a bomb. Then they opened fire on the worshipers, who were Sufis – a sect of Islam considered heretics by Islamists. Witnesses said the men shot at people who were fleeing the bombing, even shooting at ambulances and first responders.

“Officials said that militants in light trucks targeted Friday prayers, using explosives and firearms. Eyewitnesses said the attackers were masquerading as security forces and proceeded to open fire on first responders arriving at the scene. The Sinai Peninsula is a focus for jihadist groups, with both al Qaeda-linked groups and the Islamic State operating in the region.” Stratfor Worldview

According to Al-Jazeera, the vast majority of attacks in the Sinai have been claimed by Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, an ISIS-linked terror group. The group Ansar al-Islam, which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda, is also active in the Sinai. The militants have targeted Sufis, Christians, Policemen, the Egyptian military, even local Bedouins.
