Syrian Christians Attacked in Idlib
On Sunday, five children and a woman were killed in an attack on Syrian Christians in Idlib. There were conflicting reports on who was to blame, with some media saying “Al-Qaeda” and others saying “Syrian rebels.” The rockets that landed near the Sunday School in Suqaylabiyeh/Hama instantly killed the children and wounded eight others; the woman was killed by a separate rocket.
“The kids went out to play after some days of calm. A rocket struck near a group of children, instantly killing five and wounding others… the woman was killed in a nearby street by a separate rocket.” Father Maher Haddad
The Syrian army responded by firing back at the insurgents. Christians are stuck in the middle as violence in the Idlib region escalates, according to CBN. The rebels consist of jihadists of various groups who hate Christians. Assad’s government wants the rebel enclave back. It places them in an untenable position, particularly in the Idlib region.
An attack by government forces was repelled by the rebels on May 3, according to the Washington Post. A ceasefire had been brokered by Russia and Turkey in September, but is now in question from violations on both sides. From barrel bombs via the Syrian government and Russian strikes to rockets from the rebels, the situation for Christians in the region is deadly.
“The Syrian Civil War is a sad example of the indiscriminate killing of civilians and senseless violence. As the situation escalates in Idlib, many have warned that an increase of targeted massacres would be the result. It has started—with Christians paying a high cost as they are often viewed as vulnerable, second-class citizens. Their villages have become a pawn in a greater strategy for the multiple factions involved in the civil war. We must keep the families of the deceased in our prayers, and offer up continued prayers for the safety of those believers who find themselves caught between Syria’s warring sides.”

As #SyrianChristians try to survive against AlQaeda, some Western journalists are asking @realDonaldTrump @VP to help stop any offensive against Idlib. pic.twitter.com/HVFF13s0iQ— Iraqi Christian Foundation (@iraqschristians) May 13, 2019
Al-Qaeda terrorists in #Idlib, (NWest) #Syria, have massacred 6 #SyrianChristians after attacking a Christian town. 5 children & 1 woman were killed. Absolutely outrageous that Western media is asking @POTUS to help save AlQaeda terrorists in Idlib. Rest in Peace, martyrs. pic.twitter.com/N5KtSSdjyZ— Zina Rose Kiryakos (@zinarosek) May 13, 2019
