SUV Crashed into Woodfield Mall, Driver in Custody
An SUV crashed into the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois on Friday, and then drove around the inside, damaging property. The suspect was taken into custody, but not until after he created panic throughout the facility.
Initial reports claimed there was an “active shooter” at the location, but police found no evidence of any shots fired.
Update: Javier Garcia, 22, is charged with felony Criminal Damage to property as well as a Class X Felony terrorism charge. He is set to appear in bond court on Sunday, Sept 29. No motive has been determined.
The driver of the black Chevy Trailblazer crashed through the doors near the Sears store, then drove around inside the mall, striking a kiosk, causing extreme panic and scattering shoppers. There were several minor injuries, but no immediate reports of major injuries. The SUV finally crunched the vehicle and the driver jumped out and tried to run, but was taken into custody. The motive is unknown at this time.
“He was just quiet, head down, walking straight,” he said. “Not somebody wild, screaming. No chanting. Not any of those things you’d expect of somebody crazy.” Witness Lateef Farooqui to WGN.
A tweet showing the unidentified suspect was deleted, but captured by another Twitter user. It is unclear why the tweet was deleted, but the suspect may be a juvenile. In others, his face was blurred.
