Surrender! University of Mississippi Pulls Down Their Own State Flag

 In opinion, Politics

The administration of “Ole Miss” bowed to the pressure of left wing groups and removed the Mississippi State Flag from the University of Mississippi on Monday. Both the student body and the faculty voted to remove the flag.

Mississippi State Flag as it appears now…is likely not long for this world

Goodbye to an era

In a special ceremony, State Police pulled down the flag, folded it, and it was then sent to the University’s archives along with the resolution by faculty and students that demanded its removal.

“As Mississippi’s flagship university, we have a deep love and respect for our state. Because the flag remains Mississippi’s official banner, this was a hard decision. I understand the flag represents tradition and honor to some. But to others, the flag means that some members of the Ole Miss family are not welcomed or valued. That is why the university faculty, staff and leadership have united behind this student-led initiative.” Interim Chancellor Morris Stocks

The Mississippi state flag was adopted in in 1864, then repealed in 1906, and re-adopted in 2001. This 2015 controversy will cause the state to re-think their flag entirely. Is it right to change all the Southern flags? The Mississippi flag was the last one to have a confederate Southern Cross on it.

“After reflection and prayer, I now believe our state flag should be put in a museum and replaced by one that is more unifying to all Mississippians. As the descendant of several brave Americans who fought for the Confederacy, I have not viewed Mississippi’s current state flag as offensive. However, it is clearer and clearer to me that many of my fellow citizens feel differently and that our state flag increasingly portrays a false impression of our state to others.” Senator Roger Wicker

So is the flag “offensive” or have the people jumped on the bandwagon of an idea perpetuated by the media and small groups?

“Deep love and respect for our state”

The university’s loyalty changes with the political climate and shows a giant-sized disrespect for those who have gone before them. They are no longer “Ole Miss,” they are a politically correct reed that bends with the winds of left-wing politics, just like other colleges and governments across the south. At the first sign of opposition, they’ve “archived” their own flag.

The people who pretend to be tolerant are not tolerant at all. It’s sad that even our Universities cannot see what is happening to history, nor are they seeing far enough ahead to understand what they are doing.  They have waved the white flag of surrender.
