Stony Brook University Hospital – Man Arrested With Explosive Devices
A man wearing a tactical vest and carrying a backpack containing 3 explosive devices was arrested inside the emergency department at Stony Brook University Hospital on Long Island, NY. Robert Roden, 33, was arrested by police.
A security guard called police to report a suspicious person in the Stony Brook University Hospital emergency department shortly after 9 p.m. on Tuesday. When they arrived, they checked the man’s backpack and found three suspicious devices, so notified Suffolk police. The backpack also contained a BB gun in addition to the suspicious items.
Two floors of the hospital were evacuated as a precaution, and the emergency room reopened at 1:30 a.m.
Though at least one news media called the devices “fake,” authorities determined them to be dangerous.
The Long Island Press reported:
Arson Section detectives and Bomb Section technicians investigated and determined the device to be dangerous, police said.
Detectives, the Bomb Squad and Canine Unit officers, the FBI, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and university police executed a search warrant at the suspect’s Wavecrest Drive home, where they found multiple explosive devices that are being evaluated by federal investigators, police said.
Roden was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon, Criminal Contempt, and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance. Additional charges are pending.
He will be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Central Islip.

On Wednesday, police searched the suspect’s home in Mastic Beach, and found more explosives.
The motive for this incident is unknown.
This is a prime example of why we need police. Who would the Stony Brook Univesrity Hospital have called for a suspicious person? A social worker? Antifa? The UN? The fact is that most ordinary citizens will not allow our police forces to be disbanded or defunded without a fight. Antifa and Black Lives Matter not withstanding, real people will fight back — and it will not be pretty. Cowards need not apply.
