Stone Mountain- NAACP erasing history with a jackhammer

 In History, Politics

Stone Mountain, Georgia, has a carving of Confederate President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas Jonathan “Stonewall” Jackson on its face. But the NAACP wants displays that mention the Confederacy removed entirely from the Georgia landscape.

“Those guys need to go. They can be sand-blasted off, or somebody could carefully remove a slab of that and auction it off to the highest bidder.” Richard Rose, NAACP

The NAACP advocates removing ALL symbols of the Confederacy from state-owned buildings, parks and lands. But  removing a slab of that and auctioning it off would be extremely difficult. It’s solid rock, stupid.

The entire carved surface measures three-acres. The carving of the three Confederate heroes towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. The deepest point of the carving is at Lee’s elbow, which is 12 feet to the mountain’s surface.

The memorial lawn and garden below the monument speaks of a past of sacrifice. The Civil War was not JUST fought over slavery- there were many other issues, not the least of which was economic.

Stone Mountain Park is one of Georgia’s most popular attractions. It is known, not just for its carving of the Confederate Generals, but for a dramatic laser light and fireworks show. The carving on the mountain was never completed, and only shows three of the  Confederate Generals. The original design was for many more.

In their penchant to destroy history, the NAACP has no idea how much harm will come to towns like Stone Mountain, and even the state of Georgia,  who depend upon tourist revenue to survive.  It is obvious that the NAACP does not care about those little things, they just want their way, bringing more devastation to the economy, and destroying jobs for even their own people. The narrative that these monuments and history is harmful is wrong – if we forget our past, we are doomed to repeat it. And that may be exactly what is happening.
