The Post and Courier reported that the incident occurred at around 10 p.m. on Monday in York County. The report stated that McCall was beating a female and had left the residence just prior to police arrival.
Three York County deputies, Detective Michael Doty, Sgt Randy Clinton, Sgt Buddy Brown, and one K9 officer from York police department arrived to search for the suspect in the woods near the home. The first officer shot was the K9 officer, Sgt Kyle Cummings. At about 03:30 a.m. the three deputies were also shot. Detective Michael Doty was in critical condition as of Tuesday. The others are recovering. Kevin Tolson, York County Sheriff, referred to the shootings as an “ambush.”
A police helicopter was also shot during the search. The rear stabilizer was damaged, and fortunately it was able to land safely.
The manhunt intensified and lasted for about 6 hours as police combed the woods. McCall was said to have “several” rifles, although no further information was released due to the ongoing investigation. McCall was also shot during an exchange of gunfire with police, and was taken to the hospital. He has been charged with attempting to murder three officers.
York County Detective Michael Doty was critically wounded in the attack, and was described as “clinging to life.” Prosecutors are waiting to see how Detective Doty does before charging McCall for that count.
4 South Carolina police officers were shot last night after responding to a domestic violence call. Our police officers and first responders put their lives on the line each and every day to make sure we’re safe. Praying that these four officers have a speedy and full recovery.

4 South Carolina officers shot this morning/late last night. And the attention immediately turns to race of the shooter, instead of dealing with the fact that domestic violence is deadly for women and children just as it is for officers. When will that be the conversation?
