South Carolina Teen Charged with Supporting ISIS

Charleston, South Carolina – Zakaryia Abdin, 18, was arrested on March 30 as he was attempting to board a plane for Jordan to go fight with ISIS. He was charged with aiding a terrorist organization on March 31.

Not his first terrorist thought

Abdin was arrested in 2015 as a juvenile when he and another boy planned to rob a gun store, then attack American soldiers at a base near Raleigh. He ended up with just a gun possession violation in York County Juvenile court, and paroled in May of 2016 against the wishes of law enforcement.

“[Abdin was] one of the scariest people I have ever come in contact with.” York City Police Chief Andy Robinson

Nine months later he bought some guns, appeared at the FBI office and told them he bought them for “hunting” and had renounced his extremist views.  York City law enforcement was dismayed at the arrest again, saying they knew he was not rehabilitated but no one was listening.

“I am disgruntled and dismayed that the juvenile parole board would not heed our warning, and that the federal government did not pursue terrorism-related charges when he was a juvenile, which forced us to charge him with a misdemeanor gun charge rather than with a more serious terrorism-related charge.” Chief Andy Robinson

The Charlotte Observer reported,

In his current case, prosecutors say Abdin had been conspiring online for weeks with an undercover FBI agent posing as a operative for the Islamic State, commonly known as ISIS or ISIL, about his plans to travel to the Middle East to fight. Otherwise, he would commit a terrorist act at home in support of ISIS, the FBI says.

Either way, his preferred targets were fellow Americans, a newly unsealed FBI affidavit says.

Abdin appears to have dreamed of committing a massacre like Omar Mateen, who killed 49 people at the Pulse Nightclub last June.

“I swear to God … I was very close to doing what (Brother) Omar did (one month later) But I did not have weapons.”
He told the undercover operative that he had saved his money and got weapons, but sold them for a ticket to the Middle East.
“I want to kill and be killed. I run toward the enemy like a lion to a sheep.”
“I want you to place me on the frontlines just to fight Al Amrikan (the Americans). I will fight them until death, I swear, I swear, I swear.”
In the last 3 years there have been at least 220 people in the United States arrested for being part of ISIS plots to harm Americans. Last year alone there were 37. How many would have died if they had not been identified in time? We shudder to think about it.
