A German Township police officer is being hailed as a hero after he engaged a gunman who began shooting in the lobby outside a crowded courtroom in Masontown, Pennsylvania. The gunman wounded 4 people,  two men and a woman before being killed by the German Township officer, who was also injured in the incident. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time.

“In this case, as is so often the case, the German Township police officer ran toward the danger, not away. He protected over 30 to 40 people from injury or death. These police officers and these emergency management people risk their lives every day … and today they all were a shining light to our community.” Fayette County District Attorney Richard Bower

The gunman walked into the lobby of the Masontown Magistrate’s Center near Magistrate David Shimshock’s office, and opened fire on a day when the lobby and courtroom were crowded. Sgt Scott Miller, a German Township police officer engaged the shooter and fired multiple shots, killing him. Sgt Miller was shot in the hand during the firefight.

GlobalNews reported,

“A Fayette County 911 center supervisor confirmed the three civilian victims were taken to the Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, West Virginia, for treatment. Amy Johns, public affairs director at the hospital, said late Wednesday they had received a 47-year-old male, 35-year-old male and 39-year-old female from the shooting and all were in fair condition as of about 5:45 p.m.”

The gunman was supposed to appear in court today on charges of strangulation, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and simple assault in regards to a domestic violence situation. There was a protection order out against him. Police have not released his name.

[Note: it is against the law for anyone with an active domestic violence protection order to even have a firearm. Again…protection orders are just a piece of paper, and criminals pay no attention whatsoever to the law].

Masontown has a population of about 3,400 and is a suburb of Pittsburgh, PA.
