SFC Elis Barreto Ortiz Killed in Afghanistan by VBIED

 In Military

Kabiul, Afghanistan – SFC Elis Barreto Ortiz, 34, was killed when a VBIED (Vehicle Borne Improvised Explosive Device) detonated near his vehicle on Thursday. A Romanian soldier, and 11 others were also killed in the attack. It finally came clear to the administration that the “peace deal” with the Taliban could not be trusted.

The bomb detonated in the neighborhood near the US Embassy, the NATO Resolute Support mission and other diplomatic missions, according to the Army Times.

SFC Elis Barreto Ortiz was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division, 3rd Brigade Combat Team out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He went by Barreto rather than Ortiz.

His awards and decorations included the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Combat Action Badge, the Basic Parachutist Badge and the Army Driver and Mechanic Badge.

Barreto was married with children. His home was in Cameron, North Carolina. He became the 3rd soldier killed within about a week in Afghanistan, according to the Army Times.

“With honor and courage, Sgt. 1st Class Barreto answered our nation’s call to deploy and serve in Afghanistan. In this most difficult time, his loved ones are now surrounded by a community of love and caring by members of our Paratrooper Family Readiness Group.” Col. Arthur Sellers, Commander, 3rd Brigade Combat Team

The final straw

President Trump planned to meet with the Afghan government and the Taliban secretly this weekend at Camp David, but the final straw came when they attacked one of our soldiers, and killed others.

Every normal person in the world wants peace in Afghanistan. But negotiating with the Taliban, who control a large swath of the country, is like trying to make peace with a spitting cobra. Whether the talks will eventually continue or not is now formally up in the air.
