Robber with Lousy Timing Foiled by Deputy
A Berks County Deputy foiled the attempted robbery of a taxi driver in Reading, PA on Monday. And it was all caught on tape.
A taxi driver in trouble
WFMZ reported that Ralph Valleta has been driving taxi for 25 years. On Monday, he was robbed by a man with a gun, who held it to his head and screamed,
“We can do this the hard way, or we can do it the easy way, man. Just need your wallet and your phone. I need it all right now if you don’t want to die, man.”
The frightened cab driver dug in his pockets for his money as the robber demanded his wallet. He tried to convince the suspect that he didn’t have anything worth stealing, but the man kept demanding the wallet and his phone. Valleta gave it to him. All the while the camera in the taxi was recording the event.
The ‘Cavalry’ Arrives
Unbeknownst to the robber, as the taxi was stopped at a traffic light and not moving during this exchange, Terry Ely, a Berk County Deputy, pulled in behind it. Noting something was very wrong because the taxi didn’t move through a couple of green lights, he exited his squad car, pulled his gun and forced the robber out of the vehicle.
“And I was never so happy in my life to see flashing lights in the rear-view mirror,” said Valletta. “What I do for a living, I don’t like to see flashing lights because it’s usually a bad thing.” Valleta told WFMZ news
In the video you can hear the deputy telling the robber to get down on the ground. The driver advised him that the man had a gun as well.
Valleta can be heard telling the deputy “You’re a lifesaver!” Then you can hear the arrival of more patrol cars, and the exchanges with officers, driver, and robber.
Police identified the robber as 18 year old Victor Martinez-Herrera. He is currently in the Berk County jail on $100,000 bond.
