Robber-Hostage Taker Meets Good Guy with a Gun

A man with a knife entered the Marathon Gas Station in East Ridge, Tennessee at around 2 a.m. on Thursday, intent on robbing the store. He demanded money from the till and took a “large amount of cigarettes.” Instead of leaving, he also took the clerk as a hostage and threatened to kill her.

Enter the customer

As the man held the knife to her neck and dragged her toward his getaway, a customer arrived.

The customer immediately saw that there was a problem occurring at the gas station. He returned to his vehicle and retrieved his gun.

Shooting a suspect who is holding a hostage is a tricky situation. The customer had to decide whether or not he could take out the suspect without getting the hostage killed.

He approached the hostage taker and fired several shots. He hit the man in the torso. The score? Good guy 1, Bad guy 0, no injuries.

Police response

Police responded to a report of a man shot, but when they arrived they learned of the robbery/hostage attempt. The suspect was found lying in the parking lot and was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

According to wsfa, the customer is not facing any charges for shooting the man. Authorities were determining if the man had a gun permit, but that information has not been released.

Police have refused to comment, saying that the investigation is not complete.

News9 reported,

Authorities have not yet identified the robbery suspect, pending family notification.

We’ve asked East Ridge Police for the surveillance video and 911 calls from this shooting, but a spokesperson for the department says the Hamilton County District Attorney has asked that those aren’t released until this investigation is complete.

Once again, a good guy with a gun triumphs over a bad guy with evil intent.
