Obama Town Hall Meeting on Guns – Time Worn Excuses
Last night, Obama held a “town hall” style meeting about gun control. In attendance were a mother and rape survivor, Kimberly Corban, an Arizona Sheriff named Paul Babeu, and Taya Kyle,-wife of slain American Sniper Chris Kyle. They had some things to say that left the President using time-worn excuses.
“By the very nature of looking at the people who hurt our loved ones here, I don’t know any of them would have been stopped by the background check and yet, I crave that desire for hope, too. And so I think part of it we have to recognize that we cannot outlaw murder because the people who are murdering, right, they’re breaking the law but they also don’t have a moral code that we have. And so they could do the same amount of damage with a pipe bomb, the problem is they want to murder.” Taya Kyle
Exactly. It’s a heart condition, not a gun condition.
Sheriff Paul Babeu
“The executive actions that you mentioned earlier … they are not written about in the Constitution. I want to know and I think all of us really want to get to the solution: What would you have done to prevent these mass shootings and the terrorist attack? And how do we get those with mental illness and criminals — that’s the real problem here — to follow the laws?” AZ Sheriff Paul Babeu who also asked, “What shooting specifically would your executive actions have prevented?”
OUCH! Good one, Sheriff.
“As a survivor of rape and now a mother to two small children, you know it seems like being able to purchase a firearm of my choosing and being able to carry that where me and my family are — it seems like my basic responsibility as a parent at this point I have been unspeakably victimized once already and I refuse to let that happen again to myself or my kids…So why can’t your administration see that these restrictions that you’re putting to make it harder for me to own a gun or harder for me to take that where I need to be is actually just making my kids and I less safe?” Kimberly Corban
Stand firm, girl!
The President made some of his usual nutty statements against the things these people said- one of them was that “guns don’t necessarily make you safe” and “could cause an accident.” But my particular favorite was this one: “there is nothing that we have proposed that would make it harder for you to purchase a firearm.”
Fact check on that one- his new Executive Orders require reporting anyone with mental health issues. If Kimberly sought any kind of counselling from her rape, she would not be able to purchase a gun.
Every one of these people who confronted the President were respectful. But their words rang contrary to the President’s narrative. Taya Kyle knows well how devastating gun violence is- her husband died from that situation. The Sheriff lives in the midst of criminals and the potential for gun violence. Kimberly wants the right to carry a gun to protect her children.
Their logic was sound and sure. His responses were ignorant. His background checks would not have stopped the mass shootings.
