President Trump Grants Clemency to Army Members, Restores Rank to SEAL
We wrote about the possibility earlier in the month that President Trump would grant clemency to Matthew Golsteyn and Clint Lorance, with a restoration of rank to Navy SEAL Eddie Gallagher. He did it. The announcement was made Friday night.
“Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Grant of Clemency (Full Pardon) for Army First Lieutenant Clint Lorance, an Executive Grant of Clemency (Full Pardon) for Army Major Mathew Golsteyn, and an order directing the promotion of Special Warfare Operator First Class Edward R. Gallagher to the grade of E-7, the rank he held before he was tried and found not guilty of nearly all of the charges against him.” White House statement 11-15-2019
The President, as Commander in Chief, is part of the Military Justice system and has authority to intervene in these situations. He spoke at length with Secretary of Defense Mark Esper prior to the decision.
Gallagher’s reaction, posted on Instagram:
We would also like to thank the American people for their unwavering support during this very difficult time for my family and I – we can never thank you enough.
In addition I would like to thank my wife Andrea and children Treven, Ava, and Ryan. My brother Sean, my family and friends who stood by me as well as ~ Bernie Kerik, Tim Parlatore and Marc Mukasey and my entire legal team for their hard work and diligence on my behalf during our fight for justice.
I truly believe that we are blessed as a Nation to have a Commander-in-Chief that stands up for our warfighters, and cares about how they and their families are treated.
Our military is the best in the world, and with steadfast and supportive leadership; like we have in this President, our fighting force will only get stronger.
God bless the United States of America, our President, and the men and women in our armed forces and their families.”

Golsteyn’s charges will be dropped entirely. Lorance will be released from Leavenworth prison as early as Friday night, according to Fox.
“Army 1st Lt. Clint Lorance, one of two U.S. Army officers granted clemency Friday by POTUS Trump, was released from prison in Kansas on Friday night & reunited w/ family members.” ➡️https://t.co/SjeGn8CnoP
