Pierce County Deputy, Navy Veteran Killed Responding to Home Invasion

Western Washington – Deputy Daniel McCartney spent 6 years in the United States Navy with a tour in Afghanistan, and was honorably discharged in 2008. He was with the Hoquiam Police Department for 5 years before transferring to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department in 2014 according to King5. But on Sunday night, while responding to the report of a home invasion in Spanaway, Washington, he was fatally shot.

Update: Police located suspect Frank Pawul, 32, already in jail for unrelated warrants on Monday. He didn’t match the description of the suspect at first, but after interviews, they came up with his true description. He was arrested at a roadblock after the incident. He is being charged with  the murder of the officer. He has a long criminal history.

Police responded to the report of intruders in the home. Two men were determined to be involved in the incident, one white and one black. The white suspect was found dead at the scene, the other is still at large. Police deployed a K9 team to conduct a search, but as yet they have not located the suspect.

Deputy McCartney passed away at around 2:00 a.m. on Monday morning at St. Joseph’s Hospital.
