Patriot Missiles and Amphibious Landing Ship Added to US Presence Against Iran

 In Military

The US has already sent the USS Abraham Lincoln and a squadron of B-52 Bombers to the region, as we have previously reported. Now they have added a Patriot Missile system and the Amphibious Landing Transport USS Arlington. Serious power for an “unspecified” threat.

Acting Defense Secretary Shanahan ordered the deployments on Friday at the request of CENTCOM. Whatever the threats from Iran are, they appear to be serious enough for a massive response. Allegedly, Iran has made threats against US forces in the region.

Stripes reported,

A senior military official said Friday that the United States had not seen any increase in the threat level against U.S. forces in the region in recent days since the announcement of the initial deployment, but threat levels remained elevated. The threat is to U.S. troops deployed in Iraq and Syria – primarily emanating from Iranian-controlled Shia militias – and on the seas in the Persian Gulf region, where U.S. officials have observed Iranian-controlled vessels transporting military hardware including missiles, according to the official.

The senior official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the matter, described the threats as “real and credible,” but declined to provide additional details, saying they are classified.

Patriot stands for Phased Array Tracking Intercept of Target, according to National Interest. While it has a rather short range (12 miles), it’s a “hit and kill” technology. They are defensive surface to air missiles designed to shoot down short range ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and aircraft.

The Arlington is a transport ship, and will replace the smaller, older, USS Fort McHenry already deployed to the region with the Kearsarge Amphibious Readiness Group. It has command and control capability. And it carries a contingent of Marines.

The US Arlington will carry !!@$%&**! (unspecified number) Marines, their helicopters, amphibious vehicles, in what should be a large can of whoopass. Be safe out there!
