Parent’s Worst Nightmare: Burglar Found Holding Couple’s Toddler
A couple in Tempe, Arizona awakened to find a stranger standing in their living room, holding their 2 year old daughter. It was every parent’s worst nightmare. The incident occurred at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday.
The whimpering of the child awakened her parents. When the wife went to her room, the door was closed, which was unusual. She woke up her husband, who went into the living room and found a total stranger (with sagging pants) holding his 2 year old daughter.
Altercation with the father ensued while the mother called 911. Police had to ultimately deploy a stun gun to detain him.
According to ABC15,
Court paperwork indicated the father of the victim woke up to strange noises and discovered Cohen in the living room with his pants sagged down holding the child.
When the father approached the suspect, he told him, “I am your friend,” before quickly throwing the child and trying to flee.
According to police, the father tried to detain Cohen and the two got into an altercation that lasted roughly 10 minutes.
Cohen was able to flee the apartment, but was caught and held by the father in the parking lot of the apartment complex until police arrived and arrested him.
The suspect, Oren Aharon Cohen, 35, is not a US citizen, but is here on a valid passport. He told authorities that he got “black out drunk” and just wanted to return to Israel. He said that he went to the couple’s apartment by mistake, but that he had no recollection of how he got there. He claimed there was no intention to harm the little girl, he just thought she was a “midget.”
Cohen is charged with Aggravated Assault, Kidnapping, and 2nd Degree Burglary. He has had previous contact with the Tempe Police.
The little girl’s sister is 3 months old and was not involved, and the 2 year old was not harmed. There was no sign of forced entry to the home. The investigation is continuing.
