North Carolina – Butler High School Student Fatally Shot by Classmate
Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina was the scene of a shooting on Monday morning. One student fatally shot a classmate and was arrested by authorities after he told his teacher what he had done. The victim died at Carolinas Medical Center. The incident began at around 7 a..m, shortly before classes began, and was contained to the hallway.
Sixteen year old Jatwan Cuffie is charged with murder in the incident. Authorities stated that the situation between the two boys had been building for several weeks. It is unclear if Cuffie or the other student was the victim of the bullying.
Matthews Police Department Capt. Stason Tyrrell said at a news conference that 16-year-old Bobby McKeithen was shot Monday and died at a local hospital. McKeithen was a 10th-grader at Butler High School in Matthews, southeast of Charlotte.
Tyrrell said a 16-year-old ninth-grader is charged with first-degree murder and is being held in the Mecklenburg County jail. …
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox said the shooting appears to have stemmed from a case of bullying “that escalated out of control.” Neither Wilcox nor Tyrrell said which student was being bullied.

It is unclear how Cuffie managed to get the gun into the school. Police stated the school resource officer was in the school at the time and was the one that called it in. The school went into immediate lockdown, as per the procedure for an active shooter. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District chose to leave classes in session so that the students would have place to be while waiting for pickup, according to Time. The school said they would be reviewing their procedure to see if they can make improvements or if the incident could have been prevented.
