Newest Migrant “Caravan” Grows to 12,000

 In opinion, Politics

In what has become the largest migrant “caravan” so far, the latest group leaving Honduras on January 14 has grown to 12,000 people. As they move through Mexico, the number increases.

Many in the group of migrants have applied for visas in Mexico, but the rest are planning to enter the United States. At this point, even Guatemala doesn’t want the “caravan.” The Maztlan Post reported that on Sunday, citizens attacked the caravan with sticks and weapons, forcing about 2,500 migrants to flee.

Breitbart reported,

Mexican immigration officials in the city of Ciudad Hidalgo, which borders Guatemala, are establishing procedures to expedite the process in which to approve one-year humanitarian visas for members of the Central American migrant caravan who are arriving daily. The one-year humanitarian visas, promised by Mexico’s new President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, is a newly adopted policy which allows migrants to legally travel and work during their stay in Mexico.

The new policy of handing out humanitarian visas began on January 17 in response to the new caravan of primarily Honduran migrants who left their home country and headed towards the Mexican border on January 15. Officials originally estimated the caravan’s size at about 2,000. Mexico now claims the caravan’s population swelled to over 12,000 migrants, according to local media and Breitbart Texas sources…

Migrants now entering Mexico can do so by arriving at an established border crossing and applying for the humanitarian visa with Mexican immigration officials. Immigration officials explain the process will be expedited to avoid a bottleneck at the border. Although the Mexican government is encouraging members of the caravan to remain in Mexico to work, it is believed that most of the Central American migrants intend to head to the U.S. border and attempt to cross into the United States.

Our border officials  and facilities are already overwhelmed. But they keep telling anyone who will listen that a barrier, a wall, is the only thing that will slow down the influx of people.

According to Border Patrol agent Mario Campos in a Fox interview, the migrants are hoping to just cross into the US and then turn themselves into the Border Patrol. Because there is no more room and the immigration policy is lax, they end up released into the states. Campos told the Fox interviewer that there are more and more caravans because the first one in April of 2018 was viewed as successful due to releases.

It’s not just criminals that come in these caravans. Many of the people are sick – as in the last caravan, when two children died. One man was detained on Friday with a rare but deadly disease.

The  Associated Press reported: “A man among a group of migrants detained in a desolate part of New Mexico near the border with Mexico has been diagnosed as infected with flesh-eating bacteria, the U.S. Border Patrol said Friday.”

  • […] A new rotation of 3,750 US military troops to the Mexican border was announced Sunday by the Pentagon. In keeping with the intrusion penchant of the newly elected Democrats in the House,  Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash, chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, grilled Pentagon leaders over whether the deployment would affect their readiness, and whether they would should be doing ‘more important things.’ Our national security is extremely important. And remember, there are more than 12,000 more migrants headed for the United States, as we previously reported. […]
