New Orleans Saints Diss Retired Navy Commander who Refused “Tainted” Award

 In opinion, Politics

Retired Navy Cmdr. John Wells, executive director of the national Military Veterans Advocacy, was called “sad and divisive” after he refused an award to be presented during a New Orleans Saints game on Sunday Nov 5. Why? Because they continue to participate in protests that the Commander stated “taint” the award.

‘Peoples Health Champion’ is an award given to people over 65 who have made “significant” accomplishments since reaching “senior citizen” status. It is given by the Medicare Health Insurance Advantage programs. But giving the award at an NFL game when half of the players disrespect all that the Commander believes in was too much for him.

“Although I am touched and honored to be selected for such an award, the ongoing controversy with NFL players’ disrespect for the national flag forces me to decline to participate in the presentation. Since this award is tainted with the dishonorable actions of the NFL and its players, I cannot accept it. To do so would be hypocritical…I had hoped and prayed that the NFL would outlaw these disgraceful protests and wanted to give the commissioner and the owners a fair opportunity to do so. Their failure to act is a slap in the face to all of those who have served in uniform. Men and women have fought and died for the flag that the players are disrespecting.” Retired Navy Comdr John Wells

The response? Instead of changing the situation, the New Orleans Saints chose something else.

“Throughout Mr. Wells’ media appearances today, he has stated he no longer supports NFL football. That is unfortunate and disappointing considering the New Orleans Saints’ unwavering 50-plus year commitment to honor, support and recognize our servicemen and women and veterans. We will not allow Mr. Wells’ decision and subsequent media appearances to distract our players and organization from continuing to honor and support our military and veterans. We, as an organization, have decided to move on from this sad and divisive discourse and focus our attention on supporting our military and veterans.” New Orleans Saints statement

Hold the phone: who is divisive here? By the actions of the players who kneel, they demonstrate there is no honor or commitment to our military or our veterans. The players who have chosen to kneel and protest America- dishonoring the flag, the National Anthem, as well as those who fought and died for it are the divisive ones. The NFL has continued the policy of allowing such disrespect after Colin Kaepernick started it.

The cowards in the NFL need some time in combat to truly understand the sacrifices made for the flag and the anthem. They need to be in the middle of the battles to understand what the Anthem and our military is really all about.
