Navy Aviators Die After F/A-18 Crash Off Florida Coast

Two Navy Aviators perished after their F/A-18 Super Hornet crashed off Key West, Florida on Wednesday at around 4:30 p.m.. Both the pilot and the weapons systems officer were rushed to the hospital, but succumbed to their injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

 

According to the Navy, the training flight was on its final approach to Boca Chica Airfield when it crashed. Witnesses stated that suddently the plane’s wings “went vertical” and it exploded in mid air in a “fireball.”

Witness Captain Barbara Wilson of Deep Knee Charters saw the plane experience the mid air mishap and explode “like something out of a movie.”

“Then it suddenly went sideways and I heard a pop, like an explosion and I saw flames. Then it flipped and just dropped.” Capt Wilson

She did not see the crew members eject as the plane plummeted to the shallows, but the Navy reported that both crew members did eject. They were recovered within minutes and transported to the hospital. The Navy announced the crew deaths about 6 hours after the crash.
