Milwaukee, WI – AZ Dept of Public Safety Police Officers Killed in 24 Hours

 In Domestic

One 17 year veteran of the Milwaukee Police Department, and a Trooper in training in the Arizona Department of Public Safety were killed in the line of duty on July 25. Two officers, two different departments, two families grieving for their loved ones.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin July 25, 2018

Officer Michael Michalski, 52, died in an exchange of gunfire with Jonathan Copeland Jr, who was wanted on felony drug and weapons violations. Michalski was a member of the Special Investigations Division, created specifically by Chief Alfonso Morales to bring in the worst violators who are a “threat to the people of Milwaukee.”

Copeland abruptly gave up when he ran out of ammunition. He has a lengthy criminal record, including felony drug offenses, domestic violence, and parole violation. The Chief described him as one of the “10%” the department is addressing.

Chief Morales was visibly emotional while describing Michalski as a 17 year veteran of the force, and that he was his friend. The slain officer leaves behind a wife and three children.

His patrol car, covered with a black cloth, became a makeshift memorial.

Goodyear, Arizona June 25, 2018

Trooper Tyler Edenhofer just graduated from the police academy three months ago, and was still in training. He and several officers responded to a report of a man in the roadway, throwing things at cars on I-10. Three Troopers and two Goodyear Police officers struggled with a man who was resisting arrest.

The man managed to get hold of one of the officer’s guns and fatally shot Trooper Edenhofer. Trooper Dalin Dorris was shot in the shoulder in a “through and through,” and was released from the hospital along with injured Trooper Sean Rodecap (who was not shot), according to AZ Central.

Trooper Edenhofer is survived by his mother Debbie and other family members. He was a US Navy Veteran.

The suspect in this incident is described as a black male in a white t-shirt, and is in custody, being treated at a local hospital. His name has not been released, according to AZ Family.
