Mexican Gulf Cartel Training Camp Near US Border
The Mexican Gulf cartel built a training camp near Matamoros, in Tamaulipas state. Breitbart reports that it wasn’t just any old primitive training camp, either. High walls, guard towers, a garage for fitting SUVs with armor, cloned Border Patrol vehicles, target ranges, and drill areas.
According to the article, the Gulf Cartel had set up blockades throughout the area in order to keep the Mexican army from finding the camp. When they finally did discover it, the cartels had already fled, leaving behind tactical gear, armor plated vehicles, weapons, and other items.
The compound was surrounded by a wall and had a concrete guard tower used by lookouts to warn about any approaching rival forces. Inside, authorities found multiple structures including garages, workshops, and target ranges.
Inside the garages, authorities found more than a dozen vehicles including white SUVs outfitted with makeshift armor. The troops also found some SUVs that were being cloned to look like police and military vehicles typically to fool authorities.
During a search six tactical rifles, a belt-fed machine gun, 15 helmets, 86 ammunition magazines, several tactical vests, and various other items were found. Authorities also discovered a makeshift target range.
During the 1980s and early 1990s, the primary drug cartels for cocaine distribution were from Colombia. By the time of the demise of Medellin Cartel leader Pablo Escobar, and the fall of other cartel leaders, things began to change. The Mexican Gulf Cartel became an ally of the Medellin cartel. The groups broke up into federations and alliances. But the rise of the Mexican drug cartels have produced extreme violence not just in Mexico, but in the US as well.
The United States refers to the Mexican cartels as TCOs– Transnational Criminal Organizations. They operate in Mexico, shipping drugs of all kinds into the United States and other nations around the world.
They will kill over their territory- and that situation is so dangerous that even reporters who report on them from Breitbart or any other media must use an alias or be murdered. They have killed journalists, government officials, and anyone they view as a threat to their power.
They are a supply chain organization that functions “as needed.” Their reach into the United States is overwhelming, even with technology that helps discover the drugs planted inside cars, boats, etc. Staying one step ahead of them is a huge challenge for the Border Patrol, DEA, as well as other law enforcement entities, even the Coast Guard.
Still they manage to get their trade into the US. And with facilities such as the camp near Matamoros, and people willing to warn them when authorities approach, it’s no wonder.
