Merkel’s Reckoning? Germany Poised to Make Change Over Immigration Problems

 In Foreign

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been given an ultimatum: either work out an immigration policy with European leaders that would allow Germany to turn some “asylum seekers” away, or face rebellion from her own coalition government, which could bring her 13 year rule to an end.

“The Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) is demanding Merkel get tough on refugees and asylum seekers, with the party facing a critical vote in regional elections.

Merkel said she wants a bilateral agreement at an EU summit, but Horst Seehofer, the CSU interior minister, has given her an ultimatum of next Monday to change course.” Fox Insider

It’s why President Trump tweeted this morning:

Fox reported,

“Angela Merkel’s government is on the brink as the German chancellor battles her coalition partners on immigration and asylum seekers.

The coalition between Merkel’s Christian Democrats (CDU) and the Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU) has fractured over the latter’s new proposed policy that would turn away more asylum seekers at the country’s borders.

The policy flies in the face of the most powerful woman in the world and de facto leader of the European Union. In 2015, her ‘open door’ policy to migrants saw approximately a million refugees flood into the country. Although migrant arrivals have dropped steeply in the past two years, Germany still registered around 11,000 new asylum-seekers each month.”

After a meeting with the CDU and CSU, Merkel announced they had “common goals.”  She has managed to get her opposition, Horst Seehofer, to wait until the upcoming EU summit so she can work out a deal with other European nations to turn away migrants. IF that doesn’t happen, it’s going to be a bumpy ride for her.

Of course the Liberals screamed that Merkel was more “popular than ever” – not true of course, except perhaps among migrants. People have called for her to be dumped before, but she has always managed to pull it out in the end. So we’ll see.
