Nashville church shooting: One woman is dead, six people were shot, and one pistol whipped after a gunman opened fire at a Nashville church Sunday morning. The gunman accidentally shot himself after pistol whipping an usher. The shooter was hospitalized, as were the victims. About 50 people were inside the church during the incident.

UPDATE: The suspect is from Khartoum, Sudan.

Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in Antioch, southeast of Nashville, was the scene of the shooting by a black adult male. The victim were primarily seniors. The male opened fire shortly after 11:00 a.m.. Though initial reports said he was wearing a “clown mask,” police stated it was a ski mask. It was described as a “neoprene half face mask.”

The woman who was fatally shot was on her way to her car when she was struck. Then the suspect entered the rear of the church and shot 3 women and 3 men. The usher confronted the man, who pistol whipped him, causing what Fox News described as “significant injury to his head.”

The suspect “accidentally” shot himself, and the usher, who had run to his own car to retrieve his gun, held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

The gunman was identified as a black male, Emanuel Kidega Samson, a 25-year-old Rutherford County man. Two of the victims were identified as Pastor Joey Spann and his wife Peggy, 65.

The Tennessean reported that two of the victims are in critical condition with wounds to the torso and 4 others are listed as stable with wounds to the extremities. Linda Bush, 68, William Jenkins, 83, Marlene Jenkins, 84, Katherine Dickerson, 64, and Robert Engle, 22, (usher who was pistol whipped) were listed as the other victims.
