Marine LCpl Riley Kuznia Killed in DC Barracks Shooting
Lance Cpl. Riley Kuznia, 20, was killed on New Years Day at the Washington DC Barracks. The shooting itself appears to be an accident during the changing of the guard, according to the Marine Corps. It was not self-inflicted.
The incident occurred at Marine Barracks 8th and I at around 5 a.m. on New Years Day. The Marine Corps Times reported:
“The Karlstad, Minnesota, native and team leader with Guard Company at the Marine Barrack was 20 years old and was on duty at the time of the incident, according to Marine officials.
“We are truly saddened by this terrible loss. Riley was a highly driven and goal-oriented Marine whose positive attitude set the example here at the Barracks,” Col. Don Tomich, commanding officer of Marine Barracks, said in a command release.
Officers from Washington, D.C.’s Metropolitan Police Department were first on scene to the incident, which was reported at 5 a.m. Tuesday.”
His family posted: “With broken hearts we lost a loving son, cherished brother and dedicated Marine. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayer during this difficult time! Please use his Facebook account to share all the amazing memories you shared with this goofy kid. Semper fidelis!”
“The command is making every effort to take care of those involved at this time,” an official Marine Corps release said.
“The command’s priorities are to take care of the Marine’s family and friends,” Col. Don Tomich, commanding officer of Marine Barracks, said in the release. “We want to ensure these personnel are being provided for during this challenging time.” Marine Corps Times initial article
