Lone Wolf Terror Attack

Suspect Mohamed Barry noted that the owner, Hansy Baransi,  had an Israeli flag flying in front of the Nazareth Restaurant and Deli. Baransi was celebrating his heritage, as he is from Haifa, Israel.

Barry walked into the business and demanded an employee tell him where Baransi was from. About a half hour later, he returned and began hacking at customers with a machete. Four people were seriously wounded. One of the four was in critical condition. All four are expected to survive.

Though local police believed it was “random,” and refused to label it as a terror attack, the FBI is said to be investigating it as a “lone wolf terror attack.” The suspect traveled to Dubai in 2012.

Suspect killed

10TV.com reported:

…That’s when police said Barry approached a man and a woman who were sitting just inside the door at a booth and started the attack.

After the attacks, the suspect fled in his car southwest toward the Easton area.  Officers attempted a PIT maneuver during the escape, but were unsuccessful.  A short time later, a successful attempt was made, and Barry slammed into a curb near Montclair Drive.

As officers converged, Barry exited the vehicle with a knife in one hand and a machete in the other, according to police.  After unsuccessfully firing a taser at the man, he lunged across the hood at the officers and was shot dead.

[Note: a PIT maneuver is a Precision Immobilization Technique in which the pursuing police car is used to force the suspect vehicle off the road in an effort to make him stop.]

Witness description

One witness, Karen Bass, was inside the restaurant during the attack.

“He came to each table and just started hitting them. There were tables and chairs overturned there was a man on the floor bleeding there was blood on the floor…I fell like five times. My legs felt like jelly. I just thought he was going to come behind me and slash me up.” Karen Bass

Some of the patrons of the restaurant reportedly began throwing chairs at the suspect in an attempt to stop him. But the most effective end to his rampage? A hail of bullets.
