ABC News is reporting that the Las Vegas shooter’s laptop recovered from his hotel room was missing its hard drive. It has yet to be recovered. While other mass shooters have done the same thing, it doesn’t help investigators nor does it stop the conspiracy theories floating around the internet. It does leave a lot of questions.
Though other mass shooters have either smashed or removed the hard drives from their computers, in this case, the laptop was in Paddock’s hotel room, not at his home. Where did it go? How long before the shooting did he remove it? Could his “mystery woman” have taken it with her to dispose of it? Or did someone else remove it?
According to ABC, Paddock purchased software that would have enabled him to erase hard drives. But did he use it? And why would it go missing if he erased it? Did he throw it in the garbage after he erased it and it was carried away?
In 2007, Virginia Tech shooter Cho Seung Hui removed the hard drive of his computer and disposed of his cell phone shortly before the massacre. Authorities even searched a pond for the missing digital media, but the devices were never recovered.
The 2008 Northern Illinois shooter, Steven Kazmierczak, removed the SIM card from his phone and the hard drive from his laptop, and neither was recovered.
In 2012, Sandy Hook shooter Adam Lanza had removed the hard drive from his computer and smashed it with a hammer or screwdriver.
The brother of Stephen Paddock, Bruce Paddock, was arrested in California on Wednesday for possession of child pornography.
