A man spread accelerant at the front of the Kyoto Anime Studio in Japan at around 10:30 a.m. Thursday (local time). Then he ran into the studio yelling “You die!” as he lit it on fire. Thirty three people were killed, another 36 were injured, some critically. Thirteen died on the first and second floors, and 10 others died as they tried to get to the roof to get air.

The 41 year old suspect was not a colleague of the studio, according to those who escaped the blaze (Fox Business). He was injured and taken to the hospital. He remains in police custody.

NHK news reported:

The circumstances leading up to the alleged arson are still unclear. But the head of the studio said that he had recently received some threatening emails.

President of Kyoto Animation, Hideaki Hatta, said, “They were addressed to our office and sales department and told us to “die”.”

The building had at least 70 people inside when the man attacked the business. The Kyoto Anime studio was home to many talented artists that produced popular Anime themes. NHK reported that it was known worldwide for its animations, including dance sequences at the end of each show.

The Kyoto fire is the worst mass killing in several years. In 2016, a man with a knife killed 19 people at an assisted living facility.
