Kennesaw, Georgia: Mandates Firearm Ownership, Crime Rate <2%
Blue Lives Matter reported that Keenesaw, Georgia has a city ordinance that mandates firearm ownership for self defense. They’ve only had ONE homicide in the last 6 years. Their crime rate is less than 2% out of a population of 30,000. At a time when liberals are screaming to take away everyone’s gun, this is a shining example of why we should not do that.
“People kind of get the image that it’s the Wild West, where everybody walks around with a firearm strapped to their side, and it’s not like that. It’s strictly a home defense system type of deal. There’s no shootouts down the street.” Wayne Arnold, resident in an interview with KOBI5.
Mr. Arnold says he owns an AR-15 style .223 for the defense of his family.
Kennesaw is considered a suburb of Atlanta. The ordinance states that “every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm.” It went into effect in 1982, although police don’t actually enforce it.
As Mayor Derek Easterling mentioned, “If you’re going to commit a crime in Kennesaw and you’re the criminal – are you going to take a chance that that homeowner is a law-abiding citizen?…The first thing that most people say when they meet us, you know as a community is ‘oh, it’s not what I expected’. I don’t know what they expect of people who arm themselves with guns at home, or what they’re looking for, but really we’re not that.”
Kennesaw had one homicide back in 2014 when a man named Geddy Kramer wounded 6 people at a Fed-Ex facility and then killed himself. He’s the only homicide in the last 6 years, which makes the city’s overall crime rate less than 2%. Pretty impressive for a city of 30,000 folks.
Their crime rate actually fell in 2017 from the previous year. In 2016 the total of part I offenses was 673. In 2017 it fell to 552, which is a -19% difference. Their biggest problem appears to be people leaving their car doors unlocked so thieves can steal things.
Kennesaw isn’t the only town to mandate firearm ownership. Nelson, Georgia is 32 miles away from Kennesaw and also requires each household to have a firearm in an ordinance adopted in 2013. There is no penalty for non-compliance, and citizens can be exempted if they object.
