Jacksonville Issues Citation to Business for Flying Military Flags

 In Business, Domestic, Veterans

Jacksonville, Florida – A Jacksonville City Code compliance person walked in to Jaguar Sports and issued them a warning citation for flying military flags on the roof of their building on Monday. Then, according Shaun, the business’ Finance Manager, she had to gall to say to a wounded veteran, “You’ve done nothing for our country.” An outrageous thing to say to a man who was shot in the service of our country.

The post by Jaguar Sports has gone viral with over 18,000 shares and over 450,000 views and the count is going up. People are outraged.

The citation itself is a warning only. It appears to be for illegal “signage” in a commercial zone (city code 1303) referencing the way the flags are flown. Even if the flags were improperly flown, which they were not, there was still no reason for Ms Power to be so rude to a veteran.

ActionnewsJax posted the story and investigated with the city of Jacksonville. The city issued this statement:

“We are disturbed by some of the claims made about a City employee and are reviewing the facts. We are also reviewing the current ordinances regarding flags and signs to ensure accurate information was shared.
The business was issued a warning, and was not fined. Warnings are issued to provide property owners information about a possible violation, and corrective action.

I have contacted the dealership and provided the owner with the mayor’s contact information for them to discuss directly. Mayor Curry and his administration respect and appreciate those in uniform who have served and continue to serve our community, and our country.”

Mayor Lenny Curry tweeted that he has directed city employees to treat military flags the same as the American flag.

Many of the comments on Twitter were supportive of Mr Curry doing that, although it’s a sad state of affairs that he had to in the first place. Jacksonville is a military town, with Naval Base Jacksonville as well as Kings Bay Submarine Base nearby.

The higest percent of the comments on the Facebook post reflected outrage from both veterans and civilians.

As a veteran I am highly pissed that this even happen. How can someone tell a veteran that they didn’t do anything for their country? You should be a shamed of yourself. Just signing the dotted line is more than most. Keep those flags flying.

No only should she be fired, she should be made to complete boot camp and then if she survives that miserable crotch should be sent over seas for a tour of digging latrines for a couple of years. We need less of her type on this earth

The Veteran whom you said did nothing for our country himself as well as MILLIONS of other veterans lay their lives on the line everyday even for sorry ungrateful “people” as your self! My father proudly served our country for 30 years did two tours in Vietnam! I am extremely grateful to each and everyone of them! You are a sorry excuse of a human!

I would just like to know what she has done to feel like she has the entitlement to say that to a wounded vet or any vet. She does not deserve to live in a country that does not have the comforts and freedoms defended by our soldiers.

I sent a message about what I thought about her!
