Iranian Rocket Explodes in Green Zone Near US Embassy in Iraq
After an Iranian rocket fired from the eastern side of Baghdad landed less than a mile from the US Embassy in the Green Zone on Sunday evening, President Trump issued a stern warning.
If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 19, 2019
The rocket was launched from the Iranian-backed Shi’ite area of Baghdad. The US Embassy is in the so-called “green zone” of the city, where many foreign and Iraqi diplomats are housed. US non-essential personnel were removed last week due to threats against their safety, as we previously reported.

#Breaking : the Iraqi DoD has confirmed that a rocket landed and exploded in the Green zone without any human casualties.— Steven nabil (@thestevennabil) May 19, 2019
“We are aware of an explosion in the International Zone (Green Zone) outside of the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad on May 19. There were no U.S. or coalition casualties, and Iraqi Security Forces are investigating the incident.” Navy Capt. Bill Urban, spokesman, US CENTCOM
The situation didn’t make the President happy, and not long after the news reached him, he tweeted his warning. Perhaps the Iranian proxies in Eastern Baghdad think they’re dealing with Obama?
The Washington Examiner reported,
While it is unclear who was responsible for firing or supplying the Katyusha rocket, weapons of the same type were seized by Yemeni authorities on an Iranian ship in 2013. Iran is known to support terrorist groups in the region both financially and with arms, and Iranian forces are known to field Katyusha rockets…
… With a range of up to 25 miles, the Katyusha is a cheap and rudimentary weapon. Originally of Russian design, the Katyusha was first deployed by the Soviet Red Army in World War II. Its use has continued after the collapse of the Soviet Union, with multiple countries fielding it in their national armies. It is also a weapon of choice for Iranian-sponsored terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Hezbollah.
If they ever do manage to harm any US personnel, there will be hell to pay for it.
