Improvised Explosive Devices Found at Three London Transit Hubs

 In Foreign

Envelopes containing “explosive devices” were located at three different London transit hubs on Tuesday. The devices would have caused a small fire when opened..only one of the three packages was opened. The Waterloo Station, Heathrow and London City airports hubs were affected, but not disrupted for long.

The Waterloo Station is London’s busiest train facility. The first package was sent to mail hub at The Compass Centre Office at Heathrow Airport at around 0955 a.m. local time on Tuesday, where it was opened by a staff member. It started a small fire that burned part of the package, but no one was injured. The office was evacuated as a precaution. The next package was located at around 1140 a.m. at Waterloo Station. and London City Airport. At 12:10 p.m., another package was located at Aviation House, London City Airport.

Counterterrorism Police are investigating the three incidents as “linked.” Photos of the packages showed Irish postage stamps, but police dismissed any connection to Irish dissidents, saying that it didn’t fit their pattern. They stated that if they had done it, the devices would have been more “sophisticated.” Irish authorities began an investigation as well, since the packages appear to have come from Dublin.

Sky News reported,

Photos obtained by Sky News of two of the packages – A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags – showed what appeared to be Irish stamps.

The heart-shaped stamps with the words “Love Eire N” were issued as wedding stamps last year by Ireland’s postal service.

One package also had a return address that appeared to say Dublin.

A statement from Irish police said: “An Garda Siochana are assisting the Metropolitan Police with their enquiries.”

There has been no claim of responsibility as of this writing.
