House Dems Plan to Move on Banning High Capacity Magazines, Etc.
House Dems plan to return to Washington early to push banning high capacity magazines, and other gun control bills. September 4th is the target date to move the magazine bill and extreme risk protection order bills through the House. September 25 they will be taking up an “assault weapons ban.”
The Washington Examiner reported,
Nadler, a Democrat from New York, said he’ll take up a measure that would ban high-capacity ammunition magazines which were used in a string of deadly mass shootings this summer.
The committee will vote to advance the measure on Sept. 4 and plans a Sept. 25 hearing on banning “military-style assault weapons,” Nadler said.
Nadler will also hold a Sept. 4 vote on the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act, which would provide grants to encourage states to impose “red flag” laws allowing law enforcement to remove weapons from people who are deemed dangerous to themselves or others. The panel will also consider a measure that would establish procedures for obtaining extreme risk protection orders in federal court.Washington Examiner
House Dems plan to also pass the “Disarm Hate Act,” a bill that would block gun sales to anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor hate crime.
The problem with any of these proposals? Senate Republicans have been making emotional noises in support of some of them. Sen Lindsey Graham mentioned he’d support grants for states to enact red flag laws. Sen Mitch McConnell stated he’d be willing to look at both the large magazine ban and red flag laws.
We have believed that all of these bills will have nowhere to go in the Republican-controlled Senate. But that’s a shaky thought. We must act – call both your House Reps and Senators and make your position known. Otherwise we’ll have to rely on the Supreme Court to take up a 2nd amendment case. And that, my friends, is a crapshoot.
