Because of the location of the house, police had to go to a neighboring county to obtain a search warrant, which took some time to accomplish. Police finally cleared the scene at around 10 p.m.
Two younger children were at home when the incident occurred, and another child was away at school. The husband came home later that afternoon to the devastating scene, and was overcome with grief. All 3 children are now with their father.
Neighbors were horrified, and a school bus passed by the home while the teen was holding his mother’s head in the yard. Children saw it, and many parents were upset. The neighbors said they hardly knew the family.
Police stated that there had been no previous police calls to the residence.
ICE confirmed that Funes was in the country illegally from Honduras. They issued a detainer.
Wake County Public schools told WNCN that he had been enrolled in school but stopped attending in 2016.
Funes was charged with 1st Degree Murder. He made his first court appearance on Tuesday, and was held without bond. They transferred him to Central Prison because of any”special needs” he might have.
The motive for this crime is unknown at this time.
