Hawaii County Police Officer Killed, Suspect at Large

 In Domestic

A Hawaii County (Hawai’i) Police Officer, Bronson K. Kaliloa, was shot on Tuesday night at around 9:45 p.m. on the Big Island during a high risk traffic stop. The wanted suspect fled into a wooded area. Police have launched a manhunt. Officer Kaliloa succumbed to his wounds on July 18 at Hilo Medical Center after being struck in the leg and neck.

The incident occurred along Highway 11 near Mountain View, southwest of Hilo. When officers attempted to stop the suspect, he got out of the vehicle and fired “multiple shots” at officers then fled into the “brush.” The suspect is 33 year old Justin Joseph Waiki, and is wanted on a no-bail warrant out of Las Vegas. The area is just 20 miles from the volcanic eruption.

Kaliloa was a 10 year veteran of the department, and four years ago received the Hawaii county “Officer of the Month” award for capturing a violent felon without anyone else being harmed. He leaves behind 3 small children and his wife.

On an island. With a volcanic eruption in progress. If the police don’t catch him, the lava might.
