Happy 241st, US Marine Corps!
The celebrations today for the 241st birthday of the United States Marine Corps were…vast. But some awesome photos were sent in and we wanted to share some of them with you.
The featured photo of the USMC bulldog was taken by (Sgt) Jerry Seiwell, USMC veteran at the celebration at Cookies Tavern.
Here are some more pictures:
There have been formal balls cascading through the first part of November in various places. Then there were informal parties, old-fashioned camaraderie, reminiscing. It was a celebration of the brotherhood that is the United States Marine Corps. It’s likely not finished…
Where else could you celebrate your birthday for an entire month?
The US Marines are the only ones I’ve ever seen that cut their birthday cake with a sword.
They are the only military branch with a bulldog as a mascot. You can read about that relationship here:
From their inception on November 10, 1775 at Tun Tavern in Pennsylvania, to present day, the United States Marine Corps has embodied strength and tenacity. Their reputation as fighters is how they ended up as “Teufelhunden” or “Devil Dogs.”
They have always been fierce warriors, particularly when led by the likes of Lt Gen Chesty Puller or Gen James Mattis. The truth is, don’t get in their way. Bad things happen when you make Marines mad.
A few quotes from the Marine Corps’ two favorite Generals should give you the clue:
“Find the enemy that wants to end this experiment (in American democracy) and kill every one of them until they’re so sick of the killing that they leave us and our freedoms intact.” Gen James Mattis
Then one of his most popular ones:
“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet.” Gen James Mattis
“Great. Now we can shoot at those bastards from every direction.” Gen Chesty Puller
Yes, just stay out of their way. Got it? Happy 241st Birthday, U.S. Marine Corps!
