Governor Kristi Noem: Bucked Total Shutdown, Citizens Gave Her a Parade

 In Politics

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem refused to radically shut down her state in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. She continued to refuse a strict stay-at-home order after Smithfield plants began shutting down from the virus. No business was required to close, although some did, and no houses of worship were locked off. She simply made recommendations, saying that personal responsibility was important. Her citizens threw her a parade, complete with sirens blaring from fire engines, and people honking their horns to thank her for her belief in freedom.

Governor Kristi Noem could have decimated her state’s economy like other states, but she resisted the calls for a complete shutdown. The pressure was tremendous. And yet she refused, saying that personal responsibility and liberty were at the core of her decisions. She asked hospitals to reserve beds, and make sure they had plenty of PPE, which paid off  as the amount of COVID-19 was 75% less than originally projected.

Some of the FAQs on what actually occurred explained:

“South Dakota never issued a ‘stay at home’ or ‘shelter in place’ order. South Dakotans are encouraged to use common sense and practice good hygiene and reasonable physical distancing.” [Note the words “common sense” and  “reasonable.”]

“No business was ever required to close. Businesses are encouraged to consider these guidelines as they resume normal operations, and also must adhere to any local restrictions.”

“Churches were never required to close; as they resume services, they are encouraged to consider the guidelines for ‘public gatherings’ and to consider steps to maintain reasonable physical distancing.”

Governor Noem wasn’t reckless in her actions, but she did exercise common sense in her “Back to Normal” guidelines…a rare commodity in today’s political climate.

“The facts on the ground here did not support shelter-in-place.” We just didn’t have the spread. For me personally, I took an oath to uphold our state Constitution. I took an oath when I was in Congress to uphold the United States Constitution. So, I believe in people’s freedoms and liberties, and I always balance that with every decision that I make as governor. I get overly concerned with leaders who take too much power in a time of crisis because I think that’s how we directly lose our country someday by leaders overstepping their proper role.” Kristi Noem (Washington Examiner)

OMG a Governor who values the Constitutional rights of the citizens? Unheard of! But that’s why her citizens gave her a parade on April 27, to thank her for not severely locking down their state. South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, Nebraska, and Arkansas did not put severe lockdowns into practice… much to the chagrin of the fake news media like Washington Post, who blasted Gov Noem and the other states for that stand.

She stood strong. On Twitter, after she posted the video of the parade, numerous responses from people from Washington to Virginia wished she was their governor. One person from South Dakota stated:

“God bless my wonderful family of South Dakota! Thanks for keeping my loved ones safe and insuring their future with your sensible decisions. We are ALL responsible for our own safety.” James Howard

Sensible decisions. Congratulations, Governor Kristi Noem.
